The Bank of Japan raised its policy rate by 40 basis points on Friday, blowing past the 25bps ceiling almost every trader had penciled in and triggering the loudest yen move in years. The 6-3 board vote landed at 12:04 Tokyo time. By 12:06 the currency had jumped nearly three big figures.
Dr. Casimir Blum of the Meridian Macro Institute traced the mechanism to a wage-data revision the board received Wednesday night. "They saw spring bonus numbers reprinted upward and decided a quarter-point was a rounding error," Blum said. "Once you concede inflation is sticky, you stop hiking politely."
The move set off a scramble in the pit. One futures broker described colleagues standing on desks at a Marunouchi trading floor, phones wedged under chins, a spilled cup of vending-machine coffee cooling on the carpet.
Meridian's posting-tremor index spiked to a record 91 as carry-trade accounts unwound in minutes. Blum warned the ripple would reach mortgage desks by Monday.
The Bureau of Vibes and Evals, which had filed a larger hike as a hypothetical back in March, quietly moved the folder to the "actually happened" drawer. Staff say it is the first transfer in fourteen months.
Three governors dissented, arguing the economy could not absorb the shock. They were outvoted before lunch.
