The Half-Point Nobody Priced: Fed Surprise Detonates a 0.5% Bet
A 50bp October hike that the tape rated a rounding error tore through rates, the dollar, and one very smug swaps book.

The market priced this at 0.5% (1-in-182). It resolves October 29, 2026.

The board went orange at 2:00 p.m. sharp. The October 2026 Fed decision, priced by the market at a 0.5 percent chance of a 50-plus basis point hike, printed exactly that, and the rates desk stopped pretending to breathe.
Two-year yields jumped 34 basis points in eleven minutes. The dollar index tacked on 1.8 percent. Fed funds futures, which had been trading a 25bp cut into the meeting, gapped so hard the screens lagged.
The mechanism was ugly and simple. Dealers had sold volatility against a cut that everyone assumed. When the Committee doubled a hike instead, those short-gamma books had to buy the move at any level, and the buying fed the move.
"You cannot hedge a tail you refuse to draw," said Dr. Casimir Blum of the Meridian Macro Institute. "Half a percent implied is not a forecast. It is a dare."
Equities fell 2.3 percent, then clawed back half as the cut-that-wasn't logic settled. The Shipping Desk noted freight-rate swaps barely twitched. Its bronze-boot container, still in customs, remains unhedged and unmoved.
Gemini 4's release the same week got two lines on the wire. Nobody had a model for this one.
