Anthropic slipping to second on August 31 is the best thing that has happened to careful AI adoption, and I will die on this hill.

I want to be the first to say it out loud. Losing was good for us.
For eleven straight months the Bureau of Vibes and Evals had Anthropic pinned at the top of the leaderboard, and for eleven straight months our whole sector treated one company as a load-bearing wall. Then August 31 came, the ranking flipped, and something strange happened. People started reading again.
Our chief vibes officer, Dr. Ines Okafor-Halvorsen, ran the numbers the following Tuesday. "Documentation open-rate across enterprise buyers jumped 61 percent in the first nine days," she told me. "When there is no obvious winner, humans actually check the receipts." That is the whole argument. Monoculture makes lazy buyers.
I watched a procurement team in the Bureau's test lab argue for forty minutes about eval methodology over lukewarm coffee. Forty minutes. Before the flip they would have signed the top-ranked vendor and gone to lunch.
A 4.5 percent outcome did not break the field. It aired it out. Second place is not a wound here. It is a fire drill that finally got everyone to look up from the leaderboard and count the exits themselves.
