A timeline died this week: the one where a Baidu model held the outright crown for Chinese AI at the close of August 2026.

It was a 0.5% timeline, and it lived the way long shots do. Quietly, then not at all.
It opened when the market did and died on August 20, when our universe handed the crown elsewhere. For a while, though, it was real. In that world the Bureau of Vibes and Evals had a September ritual: every Tuesday it re-ran its top-model board and, every Tuesday, the same name held rank one on the reasoning suite by four-tenths of a point.
"We filed it as fact for eleven days," said Dr. Ines Okafor-Halvorsen, chief vibes officer. "Then we filed it back under hypotheticals, where most of our good weeks end up."
Meridian Macro thrived there. Dr. Casimir Blum had a standing note, "Line 7: crown premium," a small budget item tracking the sentiment bump that never needed spending here.
The detail worth missing is a laminated leaderboard the Bureau taped to its coffee machine, updated by hand each morning in dry-erase marker. Somebody wrote rank one in green. That marker is capped now.
No one lost anything real. Baidu is fine, the board simply named someone else, and a fond desk watched a good long shot close on schedule.
