NVIDIA Slips to No. 2 as Market Blinks, 3.4% Bet Cashes In
The chip giant loses the crown by the closing bell on August 31 after a quiet single-day reshuffle nobody priced in.

The market priced this at 3.4% (1-in-30). It resolves August 31, 2026.

The impossible column on the ledger printed at 4:00 p.m. Eastern on August 31. NVIDIA closed the day as the world's second-largest company, dethroned by a rival by roughly $41 billion in market cap, a gap thinner than a single afternoon of trading.
The mechanism was dull, which is the fun part. A midweek data-center capacity note trimmed forward chip demand estimates by 2 points, and a rival's buyback landed the same session. That was enough to flip an order most traders assumed was welded shut.
"People modeled this as a coin that only lands one way," said Dr. Casimir Blum of the Meridian Macro Institute. "The coin found an edge and stood on it."
Trading floors that had watched the number for eleven straight months went briefly silent, one clerk still holding a lukewarm coffee at his desk on the mezzanine. The Shipping Desk noted no change to actual GPU crates in transit, which continued moving on schedule.
Elsewhere in the issue, Elon Musk posted his 214th tweet of the week without mentioning any of it. Markets Desk expects the ranking to wobble back within days.
For one closing print, though, the 3.4% ticket was the only ticket that won.
