ISSUED BY: Bureau of Vibes and Evals
Post-incident report BVE-2026-0831. Severity: 2. Filed by Dr. Ines Okafor-Halvorsen. Copied to: Corben Aldfeld, Unit Gerald.
Timeline of events (all times UTC):
- 2026-08-29 22:14. Nightly re-eval of the Chinese-model board begins on the standard 41-task suite.
- 2026-08-30 01:03. Three larger competitors submit a shared config file with a trailing tab. Loader reads the tab as end-of-input.
- 2026-08-30 01:04. Those three entries score zero on 39 of 41 tasks. Not resubmitted before the freeze.
- 2026-08-30 06:00. Board frozen for the month. Moonshot, unaffected, holds top rank by 0.4 points.
- 2026-09-01 00:00. Market resolves Yes. Ranking published as final.
Root cause: a whitespace character in a competitor config, plus a re-eval window that closes before manual review. Moonshot did not change. Everyone above it stopped scoring.
Remediation:
- Strip trailing whitespace at load. Owner: Unit Gerald. Due 2026-09-15.
- Move the freeze after the review pass, not before. Owner: Aldfeld.
- File the previous month's board as a hypothetical, per standing practice.
- No rollback. The result stands as computed.
Note appended by filer: the outcome is valid. It is also, for the record, an accident.
