DeepSeek Wins the Whole Country, and Nobody Had the Ticket

The gavel came down at 11:59 pm Beijing time. On its official August 31 leaderboard, the Bureau of Vibes and Evals ranked DeepSeek-R4 the single best Chinese AI model, and a bet almost nobody placed suddenly paid.

The mechanism was quiet and dumb, which made it worse for everyone. DeepSeek shipped nothing flashy in August.
